  • Catholic Comments Podcast: Creighton Medical Mission to the Haitians

    • Surgeon Brian Loggie and nurse anesthetist Theresa Keefe speak with Catholic Comments co-hosts John O'Keefe and Wendy Wright about the Creighton University Medical Center's recent medical mission to aid earthquake devastated Haiti. A new podcast is posted weekly.

  • Cardoner "Calling All Readers" – James Martin, S.J., Book Discussion

    • "Calling All Readers" invites you to discuss two books with James Martin, S.J., via SKYPE (you will see and hear Fr. Martin present).

“A Jesuit Off-Broadway: Center Stage With Jesus, Judas and Life’s Biggest Questions”, will be discussed Tuesday, Feb. 16, 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the Skutt Student Center, room 104. What happens when theater and theology share the stage? Take a front-row seat to Fr. Martin’s experience as a theological consultant for the New York Theater Production of The Last Days of Judas Iscariot, directed by Oscar-winning actor Phillip Hoffman. While Martin thoughtfully responds to the deeply spiritual and soul-searching questions posed to him by the creative team and actors – questions that many of us ponder at one time or another in our lives – he learns about the world of professional theater and all that is required to put on a professional play.

“This Our Exile: A Spiritual Journey with the Refugees of East Africa,” will be discussed Tuesday, March 16, 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m., Skutt Student Center, room 105. Seamlessly combining spiritual writing, reportage, travel narrative, humor and even some recent history, a young American Jesuit tells of his time working with the refugees of East Africa. His mission was straightforward: to help the refugees who had settled in the sprawling slums of Nairobi, Kenya to start small businesses and earn a living. He imagined he would be teaching them much, and he did. But the refugees would end up teaching him much more about life, survival and faith, love and friendship.

Contact Janine ter Kuile at janine@creighton.edu to register. Each session is open to the first 40 participants. RSVP to receive the book. Participation in the discussions is encouraged.

  • Spiritual Direction and Ignatian Retreats

    • Cardoner will fund a four to eight day spiritual retreat or spiritual direction through June 30, 2010. Your retreat will include a spiritual director (find sites here). E-mail Janine ter Kuile for more information on how to be reimbursed. Only one retreat reimbursed by Cardoner is considered within a five-year period.

Ignatian spirituality, the vision of the relationship between God and the human person grounded in the mystical experiences of St. Ignatius, has its primary expression in his book of The Spiritual Exercises. More than 20 retreat houses and spirituality centers in the United States provide a variety of services based on The Spiritual Exercises for clergy, men and women religious and lay people. The Creighton Retreat Center in Griswold, Iowa, can set up a retreat for you. Contact Fr. David Smith for more information.

What is Spiritual Direction? Spiritual direction is the process of accompanying people on a spiritual journey. Spiritual direction exists in a context that emphasizes growing closer to God (or the holy or a higher power). For more information on spiritual direction and how to find a person to direct you, visit www.sdiworld.org/. Cardoner will pay for four visits for spiritual direction (for a total of $100 at $25 per hour). For further assistance in choosing a director, contact Janine ter Kuile.

  • Faculty & Staff Giving

  • Ignatian Notes

    • The advocacy and organizing aspects of the CCSJ (Creighton Center for Service and Justice) mission challenge us to work for long-term change in national and international policy on behalf of justice and sustainability. The staff draws inspiration from the efforts of Creighton alumnus Denny Holland, Fr. Markoe, S.J., and members of the Creighton DePorres Club, who, in the 1940s and 1950s, organized successful civil rights actions in Omaha. Partnering with religious and nonpartisan advocacy groups allows Creighton to participate in efforts to eliminate the death penalty in Nebraska, to seek comprehensive immigration reform in the nation, and to declare our desire that all be provided with adequate food and health care. – Maria Teresa Gaston and Ken Reed-Bouley; Unity of Hearts and Minds, Creighton University Press, 2008
