  • Tips for Planning Events in the Skutt and Harper Centers

    • To assist with the planning for events held in both the Skutt Student Center and Harper Center, the Reservations and Event Planning office will be sending out weekly tips to assist with the process. Tip of the week: Please contact the Reservations and Event Planning staff as soon as possible if you are considering hosting an event with an off-campus group (this would be considered an affiliate event and therefore would qualify for Tier 2 pricing). Our staff will be able to review technology requirements, room capacities and set-up options in advance to make sure that we can meet all expectations for you prior to signing a contract. Once the planning begins, please include our staff in your planning meetings so that we can consult on logistical issues and help to coordinate with other service providers such as Facilities, Public Safety and Catering. More information is better, so please keep us actively in the loop. Event planners are: Skutt Student Center and outdoor events: Judi Augustine, x3717; Harper Center events: Emily Huebner, x3358; and
Conferences (both buildings): Jana Ammon, x3545.

    • Naming a new desire

We could make this prayer, have this conversation with Jesus, while walking from one place to another, while shopping, over a lunch break, while doing laundry, sitting at an airport or driving to a meeting. Sometimes it is easiest to make this request precisely when I catch myself failing in some way, being particularly selfish or demanding in some way. When the Word can confront us, this is the doorway to naming a new desire. This week, we can find concrete times in our week, in real encounters and responsibilities of our very busy lives to say these or similar words: “Lord, help me to be more childlike today. Help me simply come to you when I’m burdened or just tired, rather than all the other places I tend to go for relief. Let me be yoked to you as I carry out the promises of my life today. Free me from my impatience and tendency to judge others. Teach me how showing others the mercy you have showed me is more important that my hard driving sacrifice.”
