• Chartrand Memorial Grand Rounds Sept. 10
  

  • The 10th Annual Stephen Chartrand Memorial Grand Rounds is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 10, at 8 a.m. in the Children’s Hospital Glow Education Center. Janet Englund, M.D. (professor of pediatrics, Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases, University of Washington/Seattle Children’s Hospital, Seattle, Wash.), will present “Diagnosis, Treatment and Prevention of Influenza.” If you have any questions regarding the Grand Rounds, please contact Bonnie Niemeier at 280.1238.

• Writing Center Fall 2010 Hours
  

  • Faculty: Please feel free to announce to your classes. The hours for the Creighton University Writing Center for the fall 2010 term are: Mondays 8 a.m.-1 p.m.; Tuesdays 8 a.m.-1:30 p.m.; Wednesdays 8 a.m.-5:30; Thursdays 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m.; and Fridays 8-10:30 a.m. The Writing Center is located in Creighton Hall, room 136, 280.4707.

• Memorial Service for Ashton Welch
  

  • A Memorial Mass for history professor Ashton Welch will be held Monday, Aug. 30, at 3 p.m. in St. John’s Church. All members and students of the Creighton community are invited to attend.

• Faculty Notes
  

  • Sayyid Qutb and the Origins of Radical Islamism, (Columbia/Hurst), by John Calvert, Ph.D., the Henry W. Casper Professor of History, is now available in the United States. According to a review in The Economist, “This rich and carefully researched biography sets Qutb for the first time in his Egyptian context, rescuing him from caricature without whitewashing his radicalism. It is no small achievement.”

    Jeffrey Maciejewski, Ph.D., Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, has been elected to the board of directors of the American Advertising Federation-Omaha where he will chair the public service committee.

    The novel The Cailiffs of Baghdad, Georgia (W.W. Norton & Company), by creative writing professor Mary Helen Stefaniak, will be available in bookstores on Sept. 6. The Bookworm, located in Countryside Village at 87th and Pacific streets, will host an author reading and signing at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 30.

• Program Prioritization Template Training Sessions
  

  • Additional Program Prioritization template training sessions have been scheduled for: Monday, Aug. 30, 9:30-10:30 a.m. and 2:30-3:30 p.m., Skutt Student Center, room 105; Tuesday, Aug. 31, 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., Skutt Student Center, room 104; and Thursday, Sept. 2, 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., Skutt Student Center, room 104. There is no need to register for the sessions. If you are a Department chair or director, program director, assistant/associate VP or dean and will be completing or reviewing a program report, you are encouraged to attend one of the training sessions. Program templates are accessible by user ID and blue password for those individuals identified by their deans and vice presidents.   • Pope Gregory the Great, influential Early Church Father whose feast day is celebrated on Sept. 3, is the subject of Catholic Comments host Wendy Wright's interview with co-host John O'Keefe. A new podcast is posted weekly.

• Do You Like Grapefruit Juice?
  

  • The Cardiac Center is looking for healthy volunteers ages 19-40 to participate in a four-week study on the effects of grapefruit juice on an anti-platelet medication. If you do not take any prescription or over-the-counter medications on a regular basis, you may qualify. Compensation will be given to participants. • CMA at Corporate Cup
  

  • Come by and visit Carrie Valenta, M.D., of the Creighton Medical Associates – Dundee Clinic, on Sunday, Sept. 19, at the American Lung Association Corporate Cup. CMA will be offering free blood pressure checks, health information and giveaways from 7:30 to 11 a.m. Come by and visit us in the race registration area in the Civic Auditorium on 19th and Chicago streets.

• Asthma Research Study - Investigational Medication
  

  • Research participants with asthma are needed for a research study. Do you have asthma? Have you used prednisone pills in the last 12 months? Are you between the ages of 19 and 65? The Creighton University Allergy Division is currently seeking non-smoking asthmatics for a 12-month study of an investigational asthma medication. All study medications and visits are provided at no cost to you. You may be eligible to receive compensation for your time and participation. For more information, please call Janie at 280.5972.

• A Reading by Writer Dinty Moore
  

  • The Creative Writing Program of the English Department will present a reading by writer Dinty Moore, author of Toothpick Men, The Accidental Buddhist, Between Panic and Desire and Crafting the Personal Essay. He will read from his work on Tuesday, Sept. 14, at 7 p.m. in the Skutt Student Center, room 105. Admission is free.

• Asthma Research Study
  

  • Do you have asthma? Creighton University Medical Center Allergy & Immunology Division is looking for qualified participants for an asthma trial. If you are at least 19 years of age, have a diagnosis of asthma, are a non-smoker and use an inhaler as needed, you may qualify for this research study. Qualified participants will have 10 scheduled visits over approximately a 20-week time period. You will be compensated for time and travel. For more information please call Jean at 280.5965.

• Pediatric Asthma Study
  

  • Does your child have asthma? Are they between the ages of 6 and 12 and on an inhaled steroid? If so, they may qualify to participate in an investigational asthma medication research trial that lasts approximately 10 weeks.   • You are invited to an informative 60-minute presentation hosted by Creighton’s Center for Health Services Research and Patient Safety (CHRP). CHRP is hosting a presentation via webinar with Suresh Madhavan, Ph.D., who will present “Building the West Virginia CoHORTS Center” on Thursday, Sept. 16, at 10 a.m. in Boyne 131. Madhavan is director of the West Virginia Collaborative Health Outcomes Research of Therapies and Services (West Virginia CoHORTS). • Osteoporosis Study – Have You Had a Broken Bone?
  

  • Have you had a broken bone in the last five years? If so, the Creighton University Osteoporosis Research Center is currently recruiting for a bone quality study. Call if you meet the following criteria: ages 45-80, at least four years since last menstrual period, not currently on treatment for osteoporosis, and the broken bone was not a result of an auto accident. • Service and Justice Volunteer Fair
  

  • On Wednesday, Sept. 1, from noon to 4 p.m., the Creighton Center for Service & Justice invites all faculty, staff and students to attend the annual Volunteer Fair at the Harper Center, Ahmanson Ballroom. Representatives from more than 70 local agencies will be on hand to share information about their agency and to recruit volunteers. Refreshments will be served.

• Spiritual Direction and Ignatian Retreats
  

  • Cardoner will fund a four to eight day spiritual retreat or spiritual direction through May 15, 2011. Your retreat application must be made by Oct. 9, 2010, to finalize financial commitments to this program. Your retreat will include a spiritual director (find sites here). E-mail Janine ter Kuile for more information on how to be reimbursed. Only one retreat reimbursed by Cardoner is considered within a five-year period.

    Ignatian spirituality, the vision of the relationship between God and the human person grounded in the mystical experiences of St. Ignatius, has its primary expression in his book of The Spiritual Exercises. More than 20 retreat houses and spirituality centers in the United States provide a variety of services based on The Spiritual Exercises for clergy, men and women religious and lay people.
